Meredith Riley is a biracial violinist from Ithaca, NY, currently residing in Alexandria, VA. She completed her Graduate studies receiving Advanced Music Studies certificates at Carnegie Mellon University under the tutelage of world-renowned violinist, Andres Cardenes. She received her Bachelors in Music in 2012 after studying violin performance with Brian Lewis at the University of Texas in Austin. Riley studied with Linda Case, Laura Bossert, and Margaret Pressley in her pre-college studies.

Meredith is Associate Principal second violin for the Richmond Symphony in Richmond, VA. She is currently on a year of leave from this position, though her performance career remains extremely active. Over the last decade, she has become extremely passionate about making music accessible and attainable to all. Riley was recently appointed the new Director of Education for the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra’s Sympatico program, continuing the mission of changing the face of the arts, and allowing children in ACPS [Alexandria City Public Schools] an opportunity to pursue a musical education for little to no cost.

While in Graduate school, Riley was Principal second of the Erie Philharmonic, and acting Concertmaster for Johnstown Symphony. She currently plays in the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra, Richmond Symphony, Williamsburg Symphony, and subs with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, and the Philadelphia Pops. In more recent years, she has joined Sphinx Virtuosi’s national tours to perform in some of the world’s most prestigious halls with the highest caliber musicians, all while simultaneously doing extensive outreach in a diverse range of areas, sharing music with communities that may not otherwise have access to it. With the Sphinx Virtuosi ensemble, Riley has made her debut at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Kimmel Center, the New World Center, and Ordway Concert Hall among others. She also loves to spend her time playing chamber music, and oftentimes will fill her summers with opportunities to do just that. Riley has attended many chamber music intensives in the US and Canada, and performs frequently with CMSCVA in Richmond, VA.

Riley’s performance experiences throughout her career include solo appearances with the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra, Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, New England String Orchestra in addition to the University of Texas Symphony Orchestras. In June 2009, she was selected as a Young Artist for the Starling Delay Symposium at the Juilliard School. She was a junior semi-finalist in 2007 and 2008 National Sphinx Competitions for African American and Latinx String players.

Meredith's summer festival experiences includes Wintergreen Music Festival, the Sunflower Music Festival, Toronto Summer Music Festival, NewPark Chamber Music Festival, Boston Festival Orchestra, Encore School for Strings, Heifetz International Music Festival, Chautauqua MSFO, the International Music Academy of Plzen in Czech Republic, Domaine Forget—intensive chamber music program, St. Lawrence String Seminar, Bowspeed Masterclass in Cordoba, Spain, Music by the Sea in Bamfield, BC, Steamboat Strings Music Festival, and the International Musical Enghien Encounters in Belgium.

In her free time, Meredith loves to spend time with her husband, family, dogs, eating hot sauce, singing or laughing loudly, and improvising vocally or on the violin.
